Mind
mapping
Why
does it help the brain understand complex topics?
The brain like stories, and can easily
memorize them. Mind mapping means creating many stories between the different
parts of the topic, which helps the brain to digest any complex one, merely by
memorizing one story after the other. The blocks of the topic are visible, and
the routes connecting them as well. The whole topic becomes a city with
buildings and roads connecting them. The details of this city are now all
exposed to the brain so it can easily navigate through them.
To draw a mind map, start with the main
topic, write it in the middle of the page. Then the subtitles, radiating
outwards from the central circle.
Details then
radiate from each subtopic. From the main topic to subtitle to one piece of
detail, there is a story to tell. This story is about the relationship between
each part and the previous/next one. For another piece of detail, there is
another story. The details of the different stories can be connected together
making even more ones.
